Over the Hills.

Herleif Dame-Fritjov
Settle down and listen to me

Herleif turned his green eyes every which way. Walking the borders of his new land. A land that he now ruled over. It was a hard thing to process but something he knew was bound to happen. The meeting with Aurelius was needed but he wanted to give his nephew time.

His ears pressed against the back of his head as he used Shift and slowly his body morphed into that of a lion. Long fur grew over his neck as his body filled out a bit more. His tail grew long and had less fur. He shook himself as he settled into his new body. He'd been shifting since he was a young child so this was nothing for him.

As he walked the borders he just let his mind wander. Once he finished he made his way back towards the one border. It over looked the sea and he just sat. His ears twitching as he listened to the sounds of the waves crashing loudly against the rocks.

RE: Over the Hills.

A season older, a season bigger, a season more ready for travel and curiosities! Jehanne was slowly becoming more prone to gallivanting off on her own capers, drifting away from the constant yearning for her mother, bit by bit. Did she love her mother any less? No! It would practically be a crime to even suggest such a thing. But a growing girl had growing legs, and growing legs needed a-walkin'.

So off a-walkin' Jehanne would be, never daring to venture outside of the territory that she knew, but drifting closer and closer to scent borders every day. Today, she'd sort of pushed herself and made it right up next to one. Or, that is that she assumed, based on scent. The scent of Kingdom was especially strong here (and so was the scent of the waters nearby). Did that mean a border, or a person? Jehanne couldn't tell. She was hoping, a small fraction, that it was a person of the Kingdom. That minor hope is what coaxed her out this far.

Which it was was soon revealed to her not by gift of scent, but rather by gift of sight. A male lion sat beside the ocean -- he smelled of Kingdom.

What was he doing? Jehanne would have to find out. So the girl attempted to make her way to the right side of the male lion, and sit beside him, facing the same direction as she thought he was facing. She would say nothing. Eyes would trace the skies, the waters, everything in view for any sign of interest. Ears would perk up and concentrate, hoping for a sound that had the ability to answer her question. Mouth would open slightly, allowing the feeling of salt-licked sea breezes to pass through it.

If she was able to do this, then at first, Jehanne would find no answer. What was there here? What drew the male lion here? No words of question would be uttered -- Jehanne wanted to figure it out herself.

But soon, an inexplicable feeling would hit, as Jehanne would sit enveloped in the tantalizing emotion of the sea shore. This feeling had nothing to do with the ocean, and yet she felt that the scenario she currently occupied was what brought it on.

A vague feeling of memory slowly wrapped around Jehanne's heart, and then squeezed like the unexpected embrace of a boa constrictor.

Jehanne felt a burning at her eyes and her cheeks, and the only sound she made then was a small, barely audible sniffle. But she didn't know what was wrong. She just felt it. So there she would stay -- if she was allowed -- feeling it, helplessly.

RE: Over the Hills.

Settle down and listen to me

As he sat by the cliff he saw something leather catch his eye. He leaned down to pick up a leather bracelet with the Aldrnari rune on the side of it (Anima). He cocked his head before he slipped it on his leonine paw. He let out a sigh and returned to his place to sit. It wasn't long before his Tracker nose caught another scent. He didn't turn his head until a small cub sat next to him.

The cub looked to be around his younger siblings age. Although he wasn't sure if this cub was adopted or had parents. What did make him uncomfortable was the sniffle the cub let out. He lowered his large head to peer at the cub. "Ya know, they say the sounds of the oceans are the best lullabies." He said gently.

He didn't know if the cheetah cub might have a cold or was sad but he had enough younger siblings to want to help the poor girl. Whatever her ailment may be. He was going through his own shit but helping others sort of helped keep his mind off everything. He fluffed out his mane before he laid down so he was closer to the cub. "If you'd like, you can sit between my front paws and listen to the lullaby with me." He said softly.

Jehanne was pulled out of the crux of her figurative cauldron -- in which her emotions brewed and swirled around her and out of her control in ways she could not understand -- by a gentle voice. The lion man appeared to have noticed her.

'Ya know, they say the sounds of the oceans are the best lullabies.'

Was that what he'd been doing? Listening to lullabies from the ocean? Just... listening to it? Jehanne, at first, found the sentiment silly. She felt that she wasn't in the mood for such silly things -- this man had just interrupted something unidentifiable that was happening Jehanne that she had been trying to understand. But then... then it made sense. All the sense in Jehanne's little world, in fact. And all of that sense, suddenly being made, hit Jehanne like a kick to the gut.

There was an ache Jehanne felt on her head. But not physically on her head. In her soul, on wherever the "head" of her soul was. She felt the presence of a memory, but there was no vividness to it. Her brain did not piece together a visible scene for her to watch-- or, more like rewatch. The memory appeared to have delved too far into the opaque for that to be possible.

Instead, Jehanne only remembered a feint feeling of warmth. It was on her head. No, it used to be on her head. Jehanne, in the remnants of her memory, felt it then, that warmth that used to be there. And now it wasn't. And the realization that whatever warmth had been there in the past was now gone left Jehanne feeling colder than before.

Or maybe that was just the sea breeze.

Movement of the lion brought Jehanne back to the present-present. She watched him sit down. He was closer now. She glanced at his fluffed out mane, and wondered if it was warm. Like the warmth she was missing. And then she wondered why her own "mane", the grey fuzz slowly growing out around her neck, wasn't bringing the same warmth to her as his probably was to him. There was a bit of curiosity, then a bit of envy, and then more words from the lion.

His words reminded Jehanne of the lingering cold persisting all around her. For a moment, she regarded his invitation with suspicion. She didn't even know his name. But he smelled of her, and he smelled of her mother, somewhat. And she was curious. So she would accept, showing him her answer with a curt, wordless nod.

Jehanne would attempt to nestle herself in between his front paws and sit as he'd offered. If successful, she would then find the motivation to finally speak. "I'm Jehanne," she would say to the man. And then, subconsciously expecting him to respond likewise with his own name but not really willing to pester him about it, Jehanne would fall to silence and begin to listen to the sounds of the ocean, concentrating for the soft tunes of the lullaby that were spoken of, laced within the fibers of the crashing and receding waves.

RE: Over the Hills.

Herleif Dame-Fritjov
Settle down and listen to me

His ears flicked against his long hair maned. He hadn't spent much time in his lion form. He much liked his leopard form better, perhaps due to Gadreal but he hadn't seen his friend in a long time. Longing over wanting his family and friends back came over him but he shook it off. Dwelling in the past would do him no good. As he focused more on the small cub she seemed to have a sense of melancholy about her. He denounced this as most cubs were happy and moving quite a bit. Only when they were sad did they go silent and just watch.

He watched her head nod before she moved between his front two paws. She was a tiny thing. Very close to his siblings size. Although a bit more thinner. He wasn't sure why she wasn't talkative like other cubs but he'd make sure he made her happy. Even if it was just for the moment.

He would attempt to gently rest his head upon her smaller head. Not enough for her to feel the weight but enough so that she'd feel the warmth of his neck and mane. She was so tiny that he had a need to want to protect her. Much like he wanted to protect those in his kingdom.

As she said her name he had to smile at the prettiness of it. "That is a lovely name. Mine is Herleif. But you can call me Leif if you'd like." He spoke gently. His words coming out on a soft huff so that he did not scare her.

After he finished speaking he went back to listening to the waves and watching the water come towards the cliff and then go back out to the horizon. The cub seemed to like his little sentence of the sea, at least she didn't object to it so he opened his maw once more. "Well Jehanna, i'm going to tell you a story." He started speaking.

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful goddess. She created the earth, the sea and the sky. She made all these beautiful things yet no one to share it with. So she made all the creatures and gifted them with magic. She was lonely but she could not speak with them so we soon forgot about her. Something that she thought was terrible. So she created the avatars. One for each one of us. With their own magic that some of us share with them. All powerful but glorious to see. Well one day this little girl wanted to call upon them because she was sad. She wanted friends so badly ya see? So she cried and cried. So Syuna, the mother goddess took her under her wing to be the mother she never had. A mother to look up to and to give her love. Once she left Syuna, she carried the love with her, but soon she grew hungry. So Litar came to speak with her. He taught her to hunt, but to never hunt more than you need. Each animal was precious and as long as one respected the balance they could all live in harmony. As the girl grew she wanted so badly to learn. To see new things but did not know how. Thus Mythis and Talio came to teach her anything she wanted to learn. And boy did she learn.

Even with the knowledge of the world it could not keep her from the horrors of it. So she called upon Cyfton the battle god and he came down to teach her how to be the best warrior she could. So she grew stronger. But soon she grew bored with her training and knowledge, she wanted to see the world and so Maata came down and gave her a quest. One that would bring her to all kinds of new and exciting places. When she came back though she didn't know how to tell her friends the stories! So Marlon came. He came down and spoke with her on telling stories and thus she gleamed how to tell her exciting stories to all that she met. But they grew bored with her stories. Sadder she grew until Defros came before her. Hes the trickster god you know.

Some say he hated rules, much rather make them up himself. So he came down with a silver tongue and soon she was happy. He taught her that sometimes the rules placed before you were meant to be broken. But only in the face of something dire. That it is ok to challenge the normal belief. And so the girl grew and grew and with each avatar she'd met her heart was full. All her friends thrived on her stories of them. Soon loving them themselves. She passed these stories onto her children and her childrens children. But as she grew older she knew it was her time to do. And finally she met the last avatar. Kulla. Kulla welcomed her into her embrace with open arms much like Syuna did when she was a babe. And for once she was at peace. To run into Kulla's wings and be happy for all eternity."
He said all the while keeping his eyes upon the ocean.

Getting to Kulla was hard, it just reminded him of Asger but the avatar's voice helped him. Helped him believe that his nephew was safe. He truly hoped he got each avatar, he tired to go to each of their festivals as they truly excited him to see them with his own eyes.

He hoped with his story he was able to cheer the girl up as well. Cheer her up in his own way. Story telling was his thing. It helped when his mind was too fogged up to think. Too raw in his emotions. Both of them couldn't be sad so if he cheered the pup up he'd be happy.

RE: Over the Hills.

Jehanne Dawton
Resident Floof-bullet

OC Note: This post is a monster and I'm so sorry. Most of it is just her reflecting on the story :,3 You can skip those parts if you want.

A small gasp escaped Jehanne as an acute sense of warmth pressed ever so lightly against her head, and then rippled throughout the rest of her little body. Jehanne wasn't frightened, she just didn't expect the gesture. Jehanne hardly surrounded herself with any cuddly folk; unless that cuddly folk was her mother, Jehanne never expected this much cuddly contact.

She wasn't complaining though.

The lion complimented her name, which was nice, and then he had a name. Herleif, but Jehanne could just call him Leif. Like "leaf"? Was that what he'd said? That name seemed so nice and simple, and it brought forth, for a moment, a flash of imagery of an orange leaf falling gently to the ground, awaiting a playmate. Jehanne liked that name. She would keep her opinions to herself though, now too focused on other things to care about voicing them.

Jehanne began to listen as the waves began to pull and push against rocks, the shore, the horizon. It was a soft and mellow dance that the sea shared with everything it touched. And as she watched the dancing, she began to hear to music. It was a subtle song, creeping slowly into a fanfare the more she listened, until it encompassed her and was all she felt she could hear. And she found that she loved the song, she wanted to hear it more. Perhaps she wanted it to be sung to her by the ocean for the rest of forever, to be consumed by it and live exponentially in this peace and tranquility.

But then, as if rolling in on another wave coming through, Leif had more to say. He offered a story, which piqued Jehanne's interest. She'd known stories all her life. They were about all sorts of wonderful, amazing things. Magic and dragons and wizards and more. They were all from her mother, or so she had thought. Now she knew that did not have to be the case. So she didn't object, and careened her attention Leif-wards.

The story began, and it was soon just as mesmerizing as the ocean waves.

It seemed to be a tale, at first, of the creation of all things, including magic. Jehanne could not disagree with the idea, for what did she know of the world and its creation? And what did she know of magic? It could indeed be the making of a beautiful goddess, and magic could potentially be possessed by everyone. Jehanne quickly accepted these ideas and mentally continued as the story did.

It seemed the World's Maker was lonely. So she made all the creatures and they got her magic and occupied her land, sea, and sky. Jehanne thought this was a generous way of making a friend. Who wouldn't be your friend if you'd made an entire world for them? Anyways. Soon her friends forgot about her, which she found terrible, and Jehanne did too. Really guys? She made a whole land, sea, and sky for you all!

So beings called the Avatars were made to remind them, and carry magic of their own. Some of it we-- wait, present "we"? Like, Jehanne and Leif? That kind of "we"? Wow. Jehanne hadn't known they'd had magic too, nor that they might share it with the Avatars. Jehanne had never known herself to have magic. She saved the further questions that surged for later. She wasn't about to interrupt this story.

Then there was a girl. Leif didn't give her a name, which made Jehanne curious as to what it was. It also made Jehanne curious as to whether the girl was a wizard or not. Jehanne was going to believe, for now, that she was. A lonely wizard who wanted friends, so she cried, and an Avatar named Syuna came and became her mother. And then when the wizard grew up and she had to leave Syuna, she got hungry and thus was taught to hunt by Litar. Litar also taught the girl-wizard about the balance of predator and prey, and the values of all lives.

Leif's story had many morals and lessons, Jehanne noticed. She promised in her mind to take each to heart, because they seemed like good morals and lessons.

Then the wizard wanted to learn. Jehanne felt no need to question this. All wizards always wanted to learn! That's what led them on adventures, usually. So the Avatars of Mythis and Talios came to teach her. Mythis and Talios must've known a lot in order for the girl to have learned a lot. Jehanne wondered to herself what they knew.

And then the wizard needed to learn how to fight off the "horrors" of life. Jehanne had never really experienced any horrors of life, as far as she knew, but she imagined that they included fearsome dragons and other colossal terrors. And maybe other more evil wizards! Cryfton taught the wizard how to defend herself, which seemed like a wonderful idea to Jehanne.

And then the wizard got bored with all she was learning and training; Jehanne guessed she'd probably learned and trained a lot by now. She was ready for adventure! So the Avatar named Maata came to give her an actual quest! And of course the wizard discovered tons of things on this quest, and when she returned, of course she wanted to share them. That's how stories get made! So the Avatar named Marlon helped her tell her stories by telling her stories himself. That was kind of awesome. Jehanne liked this segment a lot.

But the wizard's friends got bored of her stories. Jehanne decided that she did not like the wizard's friends. They were dumb and mean if they got bored of the wizard's stories. Jehanne was certain that any wizard's stories would be epic tales always worth listening to. But even for all of Jehanne's contempt for the friends in this story, it could not change the path Leif was set on telling Jehanne about. So the next part came.

Defros, apparently the trickster god, came next. He apparently came with a "silver tongue". Jehanne didn't know what that meant. Was it an actual metal tongue? How could that make someone happy? Maybe it was a magical artifact or something. Well, anyways, it made the girl happy, and that's what mattered. Jehanne listened to the lessons Defros taught the wizard. Sometimes the rules placed before you were meant to be broken, but only in dire situations. It is okay to challenge the normal belief. Jehanne found these important to note, so she noted them.

The Avatars' contributions had filled the girl's heart, and her stories made her friends interested and happy again. And those stories got passed down to the girl's children, and her children's children. But soon it was the wizard's time to go. Jehanne wondered where she would go now. Jehanne had already imagined her having gone everywhere. Apparently there was one more place though. The embrace of the Avatar Kulla was being counted as a place. And the wizard had never been there. So she finally got to be hugged by Kulla, and was then happy forever. At least, that's how Jehanne, who knew nothing of death, understood it.

And that was the story's end. It made sense. Eternal happiness had to be the happiest ending of all, didn't it? Jehanne smiled without showing any teeth. That story had brought her a peace of her own. She ought to thank Leif for it.

Oh, and ask questions! Jehanne had been waiting to do that. And yet, it seemed that by the end of the story, Jehanne's vault of questions had withered down and become fewer than she had thought. Perhaps she wouldn't send a flurry of questions. She didn't have enough for that. Maybe just one or two at a time. Yes, that's what she'd do. But first came the thanks.

"Thank you, Leif," Jehanne said. She tested out the name. She pronounced it more like "Leaf". She liked it. "What was the girl's name? Was she a wizard?" Jehanne would ask. Those seemed to be the most pressing questions. They had never been answered throughout the entire story. Jehanne had assumed the girl was a wizard, but it couldn't hurt to be sure.

Jehanne wouldn't look up as she waited for an answer. She would listen to the sea again, but be careful not to get too carried away in its lullaby, lest she accidentally miss what Leif might say.

Settle down and listen to me

His ears flicked as the waves crashed once more on the rock below. The warmth of the cub between his paws was lulling him into a trance like sleep. Sorta awake, sorta asleep. He wasn't sure who this cubs mom or dad was but he was content to tell her stories. He listened as she asked the name of the girl in the story and he paused to think. He hadn't actually thought of a name.

"Her name was Sera and yes she was. Im sure you could be just like her one day. Wizards come in all shapes and sizes little one." He said. The name he made up was one he hoped the name one of his kids but he wasn't thinking that far ahead. He just liked the sound of it, even if it wasn't old norse in origin. It was sort and sweet. Not to mention he had his brothers and sisters to spoil if he felt like he needed to be around children.

This cub just showed up out of nowhere but he was glad for it. It helped him keep his mind off everything that happened. He was calmer now. Even if the sun was starting to set. They'd have to walk back soon and he needed to know where the young cub lived but he could wait a few more moments, basking in the calmness.

It took Leif a little while to answer. Jehanne was okay with that. It gave her more time to just listen to the lulling, lilting tune sewn into the ocean's blanket. Her eyelids begin to feel weighed down by some invisible force, but she refused to capitulate. She fought back, and yet, so did the feeling, which also refused to surrender and desist. The yearning for sleep only grew once Leif began speaking again. It wasn't because of boredom with his words, not at all. It was for an entirely different reason. His voice became intertwined with that of the sea's, adding pleasant harmony to melody, which Jehanne could softly feel in rumbles against her hears, as well as hear. With warmth and soft vibration surrounding her, and a slight tang of saltiness and sea water in the air flooding into her nose, Jehanne felt as though she'd been cast into a sensory massage. It reminded her of her mother. Jehanne felt very safe and cozy in her little spot.

The feeling of tranquility coaxed Jehanne into drifting away. She had heard everything Leif said, but she'd only registered about half of it. From what Jehanne had heard, she'd pieced together that the girl was a wizard, her name was Sera, and Leif thought Jehanne could be a very small wizard some day. Was it that? Jehanne didn't know, but her brain felt a nice kind of fuzzy and she just thought that if that's what Leif had said, it was nice. Leif was nice. Reverently, Jehanne mumbled a response, "Thas nice... I wan be little magic too..." Jehanne's eyes were closing. She couldn't hide how sleepy she felt now. The cheetah cub would attempt to lean onto Leif's left leg. That's all she would do, if she were allowed, incapable of really thinking of anything else at the moment. Each rolling wave would seem to wash away any other thought she had.

He gave a little smile as he heard her soft words before he felt him slump against his paw. It was just like with his cousins, siblings, nephews, -it was hard to keep track- always leaning on him to sleep. He attempted to gently brush his big head against hers. His tracker nose was then used to try to figure out where she lived.

He looked down at the small cub before looking over the cliff. It could wait a few more minutes. Then he'd bring her home, he truly was calm right now. Even with a cub sleeping between his big paws. He didn't think he'd ever see the day. His green eyes move to look out over the ocean. He watched the waves crash before he watched the sun start to set. He knew he had to get her home now.

He attempted to pick the cub up by her scruff, gently as to not wake her. He used his Tracker nose to follow her scent back to where it was the heaviest. Another scent came to him, it much be her mother. He let out a soft noise to alert her mother to come outside if she was inside.
